Construction Job Market in 2024

In the first quarter of 2024, the construction sector in the UK employed almost 2.1 million people, compared to 1.89 million in the same period of 1997.   The construction industry in the UK needs to attract an additional 50,300 workers per year to meet the expected workload over the next five years, which is an increase from last year's figure of 45,000.

The industry is seeing an increase in skilled apprenticeships and more women being trained and employed in construction, which is expected to help close the workforce gender gap. There are job opportunities in new housebuilding, infrastructure projects, and repair and maintenance work.

Construction Trends in 2024

The UK construction industry is on the cusp of a significant resurgence in 2024, with an expected growth of 12% compared to the previous year. This promising forecast is largely attributed to an anticipated upturn in the UK economy, which will likely foster increased consumer and business confidence. Consequently, improved household spending and renewed faith in market stability are set to stimulate activity across various sectors within the industry.

As we assess the future of the UK construction market and industry in 2024, it's essential to take into account the following trends:

Technology: In 2024, we expect to see even greater use of technology in the construction industry. This includes things like Building Information Modelling (BIM), drones, and artificial intelligence, all of which are set to revolutionize construction processes and improve efficiency and productivity.

Sustainability: Given the increasing environmental concerns and regulatory pressures, sustainability will become a central focus in the UK construction sector. Construction companies will place more emphasis on eco-friendly practices and materials to meet sustainability goals and adapt their business models to align with changing consumer preferences.

Resilience: Despite challenges like supply chain disruptions and a shortage of skilled labour, the UK construction industry is anticipated to show resilience and adaptability in 2024. Stakeholders will employ agile strategies to grow their businesses and use innovative solutions to navigate uncertainties and take advantage of emerging opportunities.

Policy Impacts: Government policies related to infrastructure investment, housing initiatives, and sustainability mandates will significantly shape the construction industry in 2024. These policies will impact construction activities and market dynamics, presenting both challenges and opportunities for stakeholders.
